Chapter 7

Police Action

Frank and Joe waited silently behind the cartons. They knew what they would do the moment Carson and Maury came close enough. The brothers tensed their bodies, getting ready to spring out of their crouch and jump past the two men.

They listened for the sounds of unloading. Instead, they heard Maury say, “You know, Carson, I think we ought to get Benson to pitch in and help. Let’s go and get him off the boat.”

Footsteps retreated across the clearing, and the voices trailed off to whispers.

Frank and Joe held their breaths until they heard the rustle of bodies moving through the woods at the edge of the clearing. Then the sounds died out altogether. Joe, still clutching the carton, and Frank climbed out of the truck and sprinted back down the lane to their van.

Joe placed the carton carefully on the floor of the passenger side of the van. “I’m pretty sure this is the Splode-All stuff, but we can’t take any chances.”

“You’ve got to admit, though, that bringing Prescott a carton of explosives would really make him listen to our story,” said Frank.

“The Splode-All will be enough. He’ll have to listen to us,” Joe replied.

Frank nodded. “But Prescott is going to have to move fast. As soon as Goodrich and Carson find out that their cargo has been tampered with, they’ll start covering their tracks. We’ve got to hope Prescott can find some incriminating evidence at the Trusty warehouse. Near Isle is way out of his jurisdiction. I’m not even sure if it has a local police force. The county probably patrols this area. And since the stuff is being transported by boat, the Coast Guard may have to be dragged into the picture, too.”

Frank and Joe retraced their route back to Pine Beach and parked across the street from the police station. When they entered the station, they asked for Sergeant Prescott. The police officer at the front desk nodded in the direction of the squad room.

In the squad room they found Prescott, head down over some paperwork, at his desk in the corner. He looked up at them and frowned. “I was sure I’d seen the last of you two, but I guess I was wrong.” He looked at the carton in Joe’s arms. “So, what are you doing here? Trying to sell some Trusty laundry detergent to the police force?”

Frank and Joe ignored Prescott’s nasty remarks. Instead Frank said, “Listen, Sergeant, we have some important information for you. We think we’re on to something you should know about.”

He told Prescott about following Carson in the Trusty truck out to Near Isle and what they had found. Then Joe handed Prescott the carton. “Be careful,” he warned. “We’re almost one-hundred-percent sure this is Splode-All, but it might be explosive, too.”

Sergeant Prescott gave Joe a skeptical look. Then he slit open the carton with a razor blade and looked at the contents. Frank and Joe looked into the carton, too, and saw that it contained what Joe had identified as the Splode-All.
